Report - Pico Somontano

Report: Monte Somontano
Daniela Banerjee (PAI 2)

On Sunday 13th November Alegra Mountain Club held it's first event! Our goal was Pico Somontano (2.138m) starting from Puerto de Navacerrada.  For the club's first event, we had with us 6o people and a dog! Not bad at all. The plan was to leave the school at 9:00 and start the adventure at 10:20.

Our route took us through forests and rocks. With Kiko at the front and Ian at the back our team went really well. We made a few stops, had some nuts and continued with renewed energy. With all the talking and listening to music we reached the summit quite fast. When our goal was reached the kids and some parents climbed some rocks to reach the real summit of Pico Somontano. There were wonderful views up there. We took some photos and pointed at other mountains we could see from there including Peñalara, Bola del Mundo, Maliciosa and Cabeza de Hierro as well as the other 6 peaks of Siete Picos. The descent went quite fast as we played games and enjoyed it very much. Parents got the chance to meet other people while we kids had some friends with us and laughed a lot.

I also think we got a help we could have never had wished for. The luck of the weather. When we started we were a bit worried because it was quite foggy, although at the start its wasn't noticable. Our really good luck was that when we reached the summit all the clouds had gone and the sun came and warmed our faces and cold hands. We ate taking advantage of the good weather. Soon afterwards, when we started our way down the clouds and fog came again but it didn't actually matter because we didn't notice.

For me the experience was great. It seemed as we were a whole family together. We shared food and extra layers, we helped each other to never give up and successfully made it. We met a lot of people and enjoyed it very much. So if you didn't come make sure you come next 11th of December. It is going to be really good fun. See you there !!

Hope you enjoy the pics!
